Jean-Pierre Goux
Mathematician · Entrepreneur · Keynote Speaker · Writer
A life between economics, mathematics, ecology, energy, and narrative.
LinkedInJean-Pierre Goux is a mathematician, engineer, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, writer, and committed environmental advocate. Former mathematics researcher in Chicago at Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory (U.S. Department of Energy), recipient of the 2002 SIAM Prize in mathematical optimization (see full bio on Wikipedia).
A graduate of ENSTA Paris in engineering and La Sorbonne in economics. From 2000 to 2004, he participated in the creation of Artelys, a leading optimization company currently employing 170 experts in mathematics. Artelys is one of the strategic partners of Biosphere Economics.
After Artelys, he joined Powernext (European gas and power exchange, but also CO₂ until end of 2007 before the VAT fraud scandal) in 2004, where he later served as Managing Director (100+ people active in 10 countries) until 2019.
He was also during this period Head of Innovation within the EEX Group, Powernext's parent company. He developed during this time a deep knowledge of the strategic challenges facing the energy sector. He notably coordinated a covert European task force to fight organized crime and prevent a major VAT fraud on gas and electricity.
In his roles at Powernext, he explored how to reconcile traditional market economics with the challenges of climate change, renewable integration, and European integration. This experience pushed him to write novels to reimagine the energy transition and ultimately led him to develop the concept of biospheric economy. Discover the concept →
To further amplify his impact on the transition, he left Powernext at the end of 2019 and founded in 2020 Biosphere Economics and the NGO OneHome, dedicated to sharing the overview effect (the sense of wonder experienced by astronauts when seeing the Earth from space) with millions through unique NASA images.
Former president of the Institute for Desirable Futures (2019–2023). TEDx speaker. Former columnist on France Inter and Radio Nova. His expertise spans ecological transition, energy markets, corporate strategy, systemic thinking, foresight, and narratives.
Author of two sagas
Jean-Pierre Goux's novels explore how humanity could succeed in the ecological transition and overcome the forces that oppose it. These deeply documented thrillers serve as his laboratory of ideas, where he develops a 'grand planetary narrative' as a source of inspiration and hope for individuals and organizations active in their transition.
